Rescue Me ID: 16-08-30-00175Alfred (Alfie) (male)

Poodle    Age: Adult

Date into Rescue: 05/09/2015 Reason for being in rescue: breeder passed away Foster location: Cathy in Tallahassee FL Special Needs? Foster has been working on socialization and this will have to continue in his new home Weight: Height: Adoption Fee: $399 Fence needed? Absolutely! He is shy and will run off without a leash and/or without a fence. What kind of home would be best for me? His forever home has to have at least one experienced person who is at home most of the time and a willingness to dedicate him/herself to Alfie's progress. It would be best if there was another dog to help him learn and give him companionship. He ... (Read More)would not do well with children, so an adult home only please. He needs to have new experiences whether on walks or in pet stores or other public places. Obedience classes would probably be a good vehicle to get him less afraid. He cannot be let off leash even in a dog park because it would be difficult to capture him. His foster mom also would prefer his home to be as close as possible to Tallahassee, but that's not a deal breaker. The biggest attribute his foster mom will be looking for is a passion for dogs and an unfathomable belief that a dog can change, grow and become a happy member of a pack. Whoever ends up with Alfie will be very fortunate. What is my personality like? Alfie is very frightened of humans and noises. He has been with his foster mom in Tallahassee since November 2015. She has seen him come out in many ways, but he continues to be very shy. When he is not in the backyard, he hangs out in his crate in the bedroom or on his bed in the den. He is very accepting of body rubs and comes to the bedside in the morning for affection and asks for more with his paws when she stops rubbing on him. He gets along fine with the 3 other dogs and wants to play with them. He loves to eat and runs to his crate at meal time and spins and sometimes barks in anticipation of his food. His foster mom loves him, but believes he needs to be in a home with an experienced owner who can focus a significant amount of time with him so that he can continue his growth in the human world. How I act when I first meet new people: Very frightened, takes time to warm up House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. My age: est 5 years old Please note - we do not ship dogs. Rescue Me ID: 16-08-11-00125Carlton (male)

Poodle    Age: Adult

Date into Rescue: 11/12/2015 Reason for being in rescue: found as a stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Carlton is a bit of a touch me not at this point, human hands make him nervous but since he moves around very nicely on his own, we're using cues to direct him without having to have those scary hands lift him. Carlton has an occasional episode that resembles a seizure - every few months. It is not enough to make him have to go on medication. In fact, remarkably, dramamine will often draw him out. We're puzzled at the cause but it does not affect his quality of life. Weight: about 10 lbs Height: ... (Read More)about 9 inches at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $169 Fence needed? No What kind of home would be best for me? A quiet home where everyone takes their time and is kind and gentle. Carlton is a quiet, kind and gentle kind of guy. What is my personality like? Sweet, a bit shy and a little afraid things might hurt him. As he has gotten more comfortable and confident, he's doing better with timidity. He will never be a social butterfly but he has the potential to make a quiet person an excellent pet. Carlton is an omega dog - dogs that are the least bit dominant pick on Carlton and while he will defend himself, that just makes it worse and often times instead of defending, he screams and that makes more dominant dogs even more determined to get at him. He is doing very well in his play group with laid back, non dominant dogs. He would most likely do best as an only dog or with a very laid back, happy dog friend who will share and share alike. We have had Carlton for several months trying to figure out his behavior. Carlton has had 3 seizures in 5 months. They are well spaced out and are not full blown seizures. So far there is not the need for medication. He may never have another one - but we want everyone interested to know. Carlton loves food! It makes him leap for joy - literally. Watching this little guy jump 2 feet in the air for a cookie and get so excited and happy is a real treat. How I act when I first meet new people: A little timid but he warms up. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Rescue Me ID: 16-08-01-00372Whitley (female)

Poodle    Age: Adult

All about me! Name: Whitley Breed: standard poodle Age: 8 years; birthdate 07/25/08 Height: est 22 inches Weight: about 54lbs Good with dogs? yes Good with men? loves 'em Good with women? loves 'em House trained? yes Crate trained? yes Leash trained? yes Must have fenced in yard? yes Foster home is: Dreamweaver Farms Pacolet SC Adoption fee: $200.00 Why am I with a rescue group? Whitley's family recently adopted a handsome little guy with special needs, and simply didn't feel like they could give Whitley the time and attention she deserved. It was a difficult decision and not made lightly, and this is one terrific dog as a result. Whitley ... (Read More)is gorgeous in color, orange/gold to me but technically 'red' in the world of poodles. A face with white markings she reminds me of a creamcicle pop! A gorgeous tail, not full, but slightly longer than the average poodle. This dog has had time spent training her as she knows sit, down, roll-over, shake, and stay. And probably much more, that was simply all I tried on our first 'date' (assessment). She pulled on the leash and might benefit more from a harness, but again, this was only our first time out and it might be all the smells and bells were too much for her to remember all her best behaviors. Update as of February 2016: Whitley was adopted from CPR years ago and unfortunately has now returned due to some behavioral issues. Her family has reported that Whitley has shown aggression when being asked to do something she didn't want to do and aggression over food. Since she has been with us here she has shown aggression toward both the mop and the broom, and she does resource guard her food. Due to her resource guarding issues we feel she would fit best in a home without children. Whitley needs a home with a dog savvy person, someone confident in their dog handling skills, because Ms. Whitley is going to push the envelope and see what she can and cannot get away with. Once she is made aware that that behavior is unacceptable and wasn't going to be tolerated, she behaves like the good dog we know she can be. Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. (Less)

No What kind of home would be best for me? Charlie is a sweet old soul who has a few health problems but ignores them. He would love a happy place with a lot of activity that he could watch from the sidelines and participate in when he wishes. He adores people of all sizes, shapes and ages. What is my ... (Read More)personality like? Sweet, affectionate, and happy and eager to please. Charlie has two health conditions that are not treatable and are controllable. He has early age related cataracts in both eyes. A veterinary ophthalmologist has looked at Charlie and determined that while his near and detailed vision are reduced, his overalll vision is still good. At this time he does not require surgery . He will likely not need surgery for 2 to 3 years. In other words, if Charlie were you and I he'd be reaching for the reading glasses. On another interesting note, our eye doctor noted some spots in Charlie's eyes that always indicate a deep south background. His best bet is that Charlie is from Florida. Boy has he travelled a long ways. Charlie walks with a limp - Charlie C has chronic active discospondylitis from T10 thru to L2 with L1 and L2 being particularly advanced. This is almost certainly due to an early injury Laser treatments and non steroidals will improve his comfort level but he will always be affected to some extent. How I act when I first meet new people: Despite his age and physical issues, Charlie loves everyone and greets everyone with a wag and a happy tongue out expression. He would be a wonderful first dog because he is so laid back and easy going. House trained? Rescue Me ID: 16-07-19-00272Bella (female)

Cockapoo    Age: Adult

Date into Rescue: 04/02/2016 Reason for being in rescue: Bella was turned in to a southern shelter because her owners said she had become aggressive with the grandkids. She was adopted and returned because she was possessive over food - in the shelter and at the poodle farm, Bella has had no issues whatsoever an she is slowly losing weight as she is now on a healthy diet With no history of aggression we placed Bella but sadly her food aggression returned. We're now looking for a dog savvy owner who can work with food/resource guarding and understands that this is an ongoing management issue. We feed Bella in a crate - feed her always in ... (Read More)a crate with the door closed and we think you'll have a good companion. Because of Bella's history, she will not be placed in a home with children under 18. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? overweight Weight: 38 lbs needs to be 25 Height: about 14 inches at the shoulder Adoption Fee: $229 Fence needed? No Bella was turned into a local southern shelter by her owners because they said she was becoming aggressive with the grandkids. She was adopted from the shelter and returned for being possessive over food. Bella then came to us here at CPR and despite multiple attempts we could never trigger these behaviors. Bella was adopted from us and again returned for aggressively guarding the couch and biting the man. Basically, Bella is resource guarding, she is protecting any item she feels is valuable, (food, bones, beds, etc) and is afraid approaching people are going to take it away. Bella needs a home with someone that is experienced and willing to work with her on this issue. She needs a confident leader that will be consistent and give her lots and lots of structure. Bella would greatly benefit from basic obedience training, especially the place, out (give or drop it), and leave it commands. What kind of home would be best for me? Bella needs an owner who understands that food is NOT love, that loving a dog means providing the right balance of food, exercise, and direction. She would love a walking partner and friend. Absolutely no children. We don't know what happened in her first home but do not want to give her or children a chance to interact together in ways that may hurt Bella. Bella's best home will be one that is quiet, thoughtful, experienced and understands that she will not 'get better' or 'get over' resource guarding but it can be controlled. I think Bella would do best with a laid back, canine companion to help her learn to romp and play. Exercise is always more fun with a friend. However, she would be fine as an only dog also. What is my personality like? Very laid back How I act when I first meet new people: Bella says hello and then goes about her business. She does not force affection on you but will happily be part of the group . House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. She was adopted once, but did ... (Read More)not want to share her new parents with another dog. She must be an only dog. Overall, Roxy gets along with almost every animal we put her around here at the farm. But, when she gets into a home, she wants all of the attention for herself! What is my personality like? She is sweet, quiet and easy going. Roxy is shy when you first meet her, but warms up in no time! She wants to be a spoiled princess and she is all deserving of such. She is well crate trained and house trained (according to the folks who adopted her before). You really can't go wrong with this sweetheart! How I act when I first meet new people: Very friendly House trained? Roxy appears to be fully house trained. Please note you must keep her on a similar schedule to ours to continue that. Yes - Diabetes Insipidus Weight: 13 lbs Height: est 13' Adoption Fee: I'm special Fence needed? Yes - Buckles is very active and loves to run. What does Diabetes Insipidus mean? Buckles drinks water - all day - and urinates frequently as a result. This is a rare form of diabetes that is caused by a deficiency of the pituitary hormone (vasopressin) which regulates kidney function. This disorder is very uncommon and is not curable. Buckles is currently on a hormone-replacement medication (given ... (Read More)through eye drops). It is helping a little but we do not know that this is going to be her permanent cure. We are working with her to find out what works best. What is my personality like? Buckles is spunky, friendly and loving. She is energetic and must have a fenced in yard to run in. She gets along with other dogs and cats - and would be a great playmate to another dog her size or larger. Buckles is eager to please and bonds quickly. Buckles does have a 'house training' issue only because of her condition. For someone who is retired and is home all the time, her house training isn't much of a problem. She must be taken outside every two hours, and her house training is basically controlled. Buckles cannot be deprived of water as it can be fatal to her. How I act when I first meet new people: House trained? Separation anxiety, cannot be crated, needs acreage Weight: Est 70 lbs Height: Est 24 in Adoption Fee: $200 Age: Birthdate is estimated to be December 2009 What is my personality like? Annabelle is a love bug. She is so sweet and friendly, although nervous and over food the worst of her personality comes out although that has improved dramatically over the time she has been with us. If you can and will control the dogs during feeding, for instance putting them in separate rooms or put the other dog(s) into their own personal spaces like a crate, you are fine. We don't even fix food around Annabelle and other dogs. Humans can do anything they please with her food, treats and bowl but not another dog. It may have something to do with her being about 2/3 of her normal body weight when she came to us. Never knowing if you're going to get a next meal or when isn't a confidence builder. She has come a long way now that she knows that meals are regular. Annabelle has been passed around several times in her life and we are committed to finding her very last and forever home. In the meantime, she is also virtually adoptable as we help her work through many medical problems. We're all still hoping one day the perfect home will come for Annabelle. She's is that loving and affectionate to her people. Annabelle knows how to sit, and loves to work for treats. She also loves belly rubs and loves to roll over for them from our caregivers. Annabelle has been xrayed and has been confirmed with hip dysplasia but you would be hard pressed to tell when you see her playing in the fields. She runs with the best of them. However, because of the hips a home without stairs would be her best bet. Annabelle was heart worm positive. We have cleared her with what is called slow kill which is simply her monthly heartworm preventative. It must be an ivermectin based product (Triheart, Heartguard or Iverhart Max). She must remain on this. Annabelle has a BFF named Halibut that she has bonded to and he has been a huge confidence builder for her. He is a schnauzer mastiff mix. Annabelle is a big girl and likes her boys big, too. She also loved an anatolian shepherd we had that got adopted. big girl - big boys. do you have a big boy looking for buddy? Rescue Me ID: 15-02-13-00523Sidney (female)

Poodle Mix    Age: Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Sidney! Breed: Maltese Gender: female Adoption Fee: $ I'm special Date into Rescue: 02/2/2012 Reason for being in rescue: Read description Foster location: Charlotte NC Special Needs? YES - Read below Weight: Est 12 lbs Height: Est 11' 8/8/2015 update from foster family - please make sure you read the original information regarding Sidney. Sidney has been with us for three months. During this time, we have lovingly addressed any aggressive behavior and Sidney seems to be settling down in our home. As her description explains, she has gotten very attached to the me but she is doing well with my husband. Once you ... (Read More)get past her behavior, she is an incredible girl. Her coat is beautiful, but very high maintenance. I have heard folks refer to it as a cotton coat...fluffy. She loves to be with us and would love to have a family of her own and be showered with attention. She would love to be the only pet of the family. However, due to her behavior, you need to be very committed. Sidney has all her vaccination updated, blood work done and had a dental. We look forward to continuing to work with Sidney and help her find her perfect forever home! ORIGINAL INFORMATION - The West Tennessee Drug Task Force pulled over a U-Haul towing a minivan on I-40 near mile marker 42 around 11:00am on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. Instead of finding drugs, they found 141 dogs and 1 cat in the minivan and cargo area of the U-Haul without food or water. Members of the Fayette County Animal Rescue were called to the scene, and determined that the dogs were 'being held in conditions that violate Tennessee law.' According to reports at the scene, the animals were tied into cages with zip ties, appeared underweight, and their fur was matted with their own waste. Several animals were not caged, running loose in the U-Haul cargo space. The animals had been on the road since Saturday. This is where Sidney came from. This is the only information of her past that is known, and it is obviously not a positive piece of her history. Sidney's behavior more than reflects a trouble past and it will take a very special person to adopt her. Sidney can be the most wonderful, sweet and loving dog that you have ever met. She will follow you off leash, ride well in your car and keep her crate clean for a few hours at a time. Sidney will ONLY bond with a female, and this is not debatable. She must be adopted to a home who has females living in it only. She will run up to a male (and some women, too) and nip at their ankles, while constantly barking and growling. If she is spooked enough, she will bite and make contact. She is not going to bond with ANYONE immediately, it is going to take some time. Sidney has bitten several people in her time here, but never anyone that she trusts. If you can gain Sid's trust, you will have an awesome little shadow dog. There is a video of her meeting a male and him luring her with treats - when the treats were all gone, she proceeded to bark, growl and back away from him. Her house training is quite frankly pretty terrible. She WILL use the bathroom outside if you keep her on a very strict routine and take her out multiple times a day. If you turn your head, however, and she has to go... she will! Sidney walks perfectly on a leash and even better off leash (in a safe fenced in environment only). Once she bonds with you, she thinks you are the ruler of the world and will give you her entire heart. Sidney is familiar with being in a home as she was adopted once before and it did not work out, through no fault of her own. She knows what it's like to curl up on a nice cozy bed, or in her favorite spot on the couch. She likes to be in a home. Sid gets along wonderfully with other dogs and would be a great companion to your current pet. She would also be fine as an only dog, as she would love to absorb all of the attention, all the time. Sidney does not know any commands but is an intelligent girl who could learn with some training. Who I am seeking: A very, very experienced, patient female. You must be committed to taking things very slow and giving her a minimum of 30 days to get to know you. Absolutely no children in Sidney's life - no exceptions. Age: est birthdate 02/02/2010 Please note - we will not place Sidney in a home with children under 16. Please note - we do not ship dogs. After being assessed by a trainer, we believe it will take a very long time - possibly years to undo the damage that has been done to this guy. He is very strong on a leash but will walk alongside you, especially when he is wearing a harness. Sherlock is a bright dog with many skills. Cues he knows include : sit, wait (stay), up (stand up from laying down), down (to lay down), leave-it (walk away from whatever it is he's smelling, eating, doing etc.), kennel (go to his kennel), heel, here (his recall/come). There are a few other commands that he knew like 'place' and 'look sharp' but the previous owner did not reinforce these commands. Sherlock does have some resource guarding tendencies, especially inside of his crate over his food bowl. This is most evident when other dogs approach him. Our caregiver can now put his bowl in and take it out of the crate with no issues. This is a huge improvement from when he first came here. Also, according to what his previous owner witnessed with him, he does not like to be approached while he is lying down. He will growl, show teeth and or bite. We have not seen this at the farm, however farm-life and home-life are two different things, and he may resort to this behavior again once he is back in a home. Also according to his behavior with his previous owner, he could not be bathed or groomed without a muzzle. At first, we were able to do both without a muzzle here, but again he is out of his comfort zone, and sometimes dog's do not show their 'true nature' until they are comfortable. A few months into his stay with CPR, he did get wild during grooming and we chose to get him shaved down under sedation but we're going to try again. We have had two bite incidents at the farm with Sherlock. In both cases, Sherlock warned the caregiver repeatedly and the warning one time was ignored and the second time, Sherlock had a rag wrapped around his foot and it was cutting off circulation. Our caregiver was a new one and did not know he had time to call for help so he tried to remove the rag himself. It was painful and Sherlock snapped at him In both cases, the bite broke skin but did not require stitches or a doctor's visit. On a positive note, Sherlock is a happy, affectionate dog. There is much more to him than some bad habits, he loves attention and he loves to be petted. Sherlock is house and crate trained, and is VERY well mannered indoors. He really is a sweet dog who could make someone a wonderful companion, if you are are strong dog leader who understands this dog must always be closely monitored and whose energy must be drawn to positive activities. He loves to run and would make a great jogging or hiking companion. Who I am seeking: Because of his behavior, we understand Sherlock may be with for the rest of his life so he is available for virtual adoption and is seeking sponsors to help us afford to care for him. If you hate shocking dogs as much as I do, then consider Sherlock as your virtually adoptable favorite guy. Thinking you can handle him - we have requirements for Sherlock. He must be adopted by someone who is a very experienced dog-owner. Preferably someone who has experience with the breed and with the behaviors that we are describing. He must be an only dog - other animals overwhelm him and spark some of these bad habits of his. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. (Less)
